Understanding hair loss
Male pattern hair loss affects roughly 50% of men by age 50. It is caused by DHT, a hormone your body produces naturally from testosterone. DHT shrinks hair follicles over time, causing thinner, shorter growth until the follicle stops producing visible hair entirely.
The process is progressive. Once a follicle is lost, it cannot be recovered. Prescription treatment works by blocking DHT and stimulating growth in follicles that are still active. The sooner treatment starts, the more your doctor has to work with.
